Self Reflection

For the final photo critique, I really wanted to focus on what I felt was lacking to create a colorful diverse body of work for my food portfolio. I wanted to include the color yellow & add a few more darker images. I’m looking forward to sequencing everything together. This project was a lot of fun, but I’m ready to take a break from photographing food, I think it will be good for me to refresh my vision and reduce redundancy. Overall, I had a lot of fun shooting food for a while and I feel much more confident about it. This summer I’ll be looking forward to expanding this body of work and incorporating people into the mix as well.

Self Reflection

This week, I realized how difficult photography could be without a team. I cooked and photographed these images alone due to lack of scheduling. Most food photographers have a stylist or a chef with them on the shoot, which would be so handy. However it’s difficult being a student, because everyone has such a busy schedule and I don’t have the funds right now to hire someone. So working by myself was challenging because I feel so much more confident in my images when someone is critiquing as I’m shooting and telling me what I should adjust and what’s working. I did my best to make it work out, and over the next two weeks I’m going to search for images that I feel are lacking in my portfolio that will tie it all together.

Self Reflection

I’ve decided to focus on food as my main goal in foundation portfolio this term, not because I want to solely be a food photographer, but because food photography is something that I want to be successful in. Earlier this week, I was having a really hard time with this project. As much as I love looking at portraits of food, I wasn’t sure if food photography was for me. I struggled with styling and making the food look pretty. I struggled finding the next item that I wanted to photograph. I just struggled with motivation. Then one day, my roommate said she was gonna make orange lavender cake & I thought “Oh my gosh, that sounds delicious!” Then it clicked, I was determined to use the warm and colorful ingredients of her dish to create an appealing image. Thankfully, she was even willing to hand model for me. We ended up having a really fun day cooking, baking and photographing. I’m slowly finding my groove in food photography. It’s definitely teaching me to be more patient than I have been with photographing people, but I feel that it’s pretty relevant to my daily lifestyle.

I finally have a real blog/website. (click the link above to explore)! I will still be on tumblr, but mostly for finding likes & inspirations so keep ‘em coming! I won’t post on here much if at all, but I’ll post my weekly life musings on there from now on. I’m excited for all these new changes that autumn brings! I cannot believe I’ll be twenty-three in a week. God has blessed me in so many new ways this year. If you’d like to keep in touch, feel free to send me an email: beedeephoto@yahoo.com.

balancing with // without a camera

But there is another kind of seeing that involves a letting go. When I see this way I sway transfixed and emptied. The difference between the two ways of seeing is the difference between walking with and without a camera. When I walk with a camera I walk from shot to shot, reading the light on a calibrated meter. When I walk without a camera, my own shutter opens, and the moment’s light prints on my own silver gut. When I see this second way I am above all an unscrupulous observer.

summer is almost here!

I can’t wait to run the hidden pine trails of the forest & taste the sun sweet berries of the earth. To roll in all the riches all around me & for once never wonder what they’re worth.
